Kingtronics introduce Characteristics of MLCC

 MLCC is an abbreviation for multilayer ceramic capacitor.


According to temperature characteristics, materials, and production processes, MLCC can be divided into the following categories: NPO, COG, Y5V, Z5U, X7R, X5R, and so on.
NPO and COG have stable temperature characteristics, small capacitance value, and high price;
Y5V and Z5U have large temperature characteristics, large capacitance values, and low prices;
X7R and X5R are between the above two types.

Classified by material SIZE. It can be roughly divided into 3225, 3216, 2012, 1608, 1005, 0603, 0402. The larger the value, the wider and thicker the SIZE. Currently, the most commonly used is 3225, and the minimum is 0402.

Currently, chip multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) materials widely used in portable products can be divided into two major categories based on temperature characteristics: BME based C0G products and LOW ESR selected X7R (X5R) products.

The capacity of the C0G type MLCC is mostly below 1000pF, and the main performance index related to low power consumption of this type of capacitor is the loss angle tangent value tan δ (DF)。 The DF value range of C0G products for traditional noble metal electrodes (NME) is (2.0 to 8.0) × 10-4, while the DF value range of C0G products for innovative base metal electrodes (BMEs) is (1.0 to 2.5) × 10-4, about (31-50)% of the former. This type of product has significant low power consumption characteristics in GSM, CDMA, cordless phones, Bluetooth, and GPS systems with T/R module circuits.

The capacity of the X7R (X5R) type MLCC is mainly concentrated above 1000 pF, and the main performance index related to the low power consumption of this type of capacitor is the equivalent series resistance (ESR).
