Kingtronics - Why is there a global chip shortage?

We have to look at several factors that created this shortage tsunami that blindsided everyone. We have broken them down into the following: supply, demand, unfortunate events, and poor decision-making.

Surge in Demand
When Covid-19 restrictions rolled out worldwide, stay-at-home mandates were the norm to prevent the transmission and spread of the virus. Everyone shifted to work from home setups, businesses went online, and messaging applications were downloaded immediately. Consequently, demand for additional electronic gadgets skyrocketed. People upgraded their laptops, purchased new desktops, more tablets, etc., to meet the requirements of the current situation.

This bottlenecked supply chains, as retailers did not prepare for the sudden increase in demand for new requirements. Add the existing projects in their pipelines, and you have the perfect recipe for a global semiconductor disaster.

Bad Luck
Aside from facing COVID-related challenges, some of the biggest foundries in the world were hit by a series of unfortunate events that disrupted their production process even more.

On March 19, an electric overload burned down 600 square meters of the Renesas plant in Naka, one of the most prominent players in the global chip market. It destroyed 23 machines and rendered other areas in the facility temporarily unfit for use.

The plant was running to total capacity again by June, but the damage has been done.

In Taiwan, the worst drought in recent memory threatened to make the chip shortage even worse. Producing chips require tremendous amounts of water, which the drought is making impossible to do. In Texas, winter storms forced some of the country’s only chip plants to stop production.

Still, there are only a handful of big chip manufacturers globally, making the semiconductor industry more vulnerable.

Kt Kingtronics Introduces Causes of Poor Chip MLCC

 In the use of chip MLCC, many customers will encounter capacitor cracking, short circuit, burning and other phenomena, so how to deal with these phenomena?

First of all, we need to know the causes of these phenomena.

A. Crack (refers to the crack on the capacitor that causes the product to fail to work normally). This phenomenon is generally caused by low resistance.
The reasons are as follows.

1. PCB is mostly open circuit after external force.
2. If the non-capacitor body is impacted by external force, it may have short circuit or low resistance.
3. Too high applied stress voltage will lead to MLCC capacitor failure, generally short circuit or low resistance, but this kind of phenomenon should not be much in the case of sufficient allowance.

In this case, it is generally necessary to check whether the product will be vibrated or shaken when working, and then check whether the product capacity meets the requirements.
B. Short circuit burn out (refers to the damage of the capacitor in the PCB board, resulting in the failure of the product to continue to work).

The reasons for this phenomenon are as follows.
1. The model of capacitor package is not big enough;
2. Insufficient reserved allowance;
3. The voltage withstand is too low or the product current is too high.

If this happens, we need to replace the chip capacitor model and check the specific reason. Then choose to replace the chip capacitor capacity or model.
If you can't find a suitable model to replace, you can use the capacitors in parallel or series to solve the problem.

Kt Kingtroncs-Work Together for Preparing the Upcoming 5G Era with Increasing Demand of MLCCs

It said most popular topic in 2018 is Artificial Intelligence (AI), then the promising keyword in 2019 must be 5G mobile communication technology.
As EPCI reported:
In many respects, however, 5G will be a two-edged sword in that customer demand for new 5G mobile phones in 2019/20 is going to put additional strain on capacity within the electronic components supply network as components manufacturers and their distributors struggle to keep up with demand.
Here’s why: smartphones are the largest application market for multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) and at a time when major MLCC manufacturers are trying to increase production capacity to alleviating the current shortage, the dawning of the 5G era will rapidly increase the amount of MLCC s used. The average MLCC usage of 4G + (LTE-advanced) smartphones is estimated to be in the range of 550 to around 900, and it is predicted that each device in the 5G era will boost this number to more than 1,000.
We can imagine it will be a new trend and challenge to the components manufacturers and distributors for the upcoming increasing demand.
